Hi! I'm Lisa French!

I am Associate Professor of Cinema Studies, Media and Communications at RMIT University (city campus).

My research interests are in Cinema Studies, particularly Australian film, and in relation to gender. I am the editor and co-writer of the book Womenvision: Women and the Moving Image in Australia (Damned Publishing, 2003); the current chair of the editorial board of The Moving Image monograph series; and was the founding editor of Practice, A Journal of Visual, Performing & Media Arts.  I have published in Australian and international refereed journals, and written for industry publications such as Screenhub. I also am the producer of the documentary Birth of a Film Festival (2003), and co-producer of the Autism – The Teen Years.

I have served on many Australian film industry boards including nine years on the board of the Australian Film Institute and others such as, MIFF, WIFT, ATOM and the International Documentary Conference and Film Festival. My background in cultural activities includes three years as the Director of the St Kilda Film Festival, three years running the ATOM Awards, and also running the inaugural Children’s Festival of the Melbourne International Film Festival (1990).

I have recently completed a book on the history of the Australian Film Institute, Shining a Light: 50 Years of the AFI, which was launched last month. You can find out more from the Australian Film Institute website at www.afi.org.au.
